According to research, there are three ways we as humans respond to life’s experiences:
- Emotionally
- Reasonably
- Wisely
Because we all have a pre-disposition toward one of these three ways to respond, it’s important to know (1) our default and (2) how to navigate our way toward wisdom.
At the end of the day, there is not right or wrong way to respond. There’s only the way that works most effectively.
When we lead with our emotions, we may look at situations through our emotional lens, potentially distorting a memory to fit our emotional narrative. This may occur in extreme situations, we get a promotion, fired, get great news, bad news….you get the idea.
When we respond reasonably, we are using our intellect and seemingly disconnected from our emotions. Emotions aren’t bad if we recognize and practice self-control to put them to the best use.
When we respond wisely, we are harnessing both our emotions and intellect to bring the best decision making to each and every situation.
So we want to ask ourselves:
- What is my default?
- What do I need to learn to do to achieve more wisdom?
- How do I harmonize my emotions and intellect to see the whole picture and make the best decision?
We want to ask ourselves these questions because we want to get better, we want to be able to see the entire scenario, and we want to raise our level of self-awareness in order to achieve greatness for ourselves, our team, and our families.
